About rAndom International

rAndom-Group-Shout

rAndom was founded by Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch in 2002. The studio was  set up to extend the perspective of contemporary artistic practice.

Working from the fringes of art, design, science and architecture, rAndom are developing projects and installations that re-interpret the ‘cold’ nature of digital-based work and emphasise the interaction between the animate (audience) and the inanimate (object), bringing the two into a powerful relationship of performance. The studio’s work has won many awards in the fields art, architecture and design over the past few years. In 2010 they were named Design Miamis’ ‘Designer of The Future’ and won a second Illy Award at Art Brussels for best solo presentation of an artist. In 2009 their interactive ‘Audience’ installation received an Honorable Mention at Prix Ars Electronica and the Observer recognized rAndom among the top ten UK designers in 2007. rAndom has won several diverse awards, including: the iF Design award in 2006 and in 2005; the Wallpaper design award, 2006 and the Creative Futures Award, 2005.Their works have won several top design awards, including the iF Design award in 2005 and 2006, the Wallpaper design award (2006), and the Creative Futures Award (2005). The group taught as a collective at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design until 2010, and taught and still regularly contribute to Platform 8, Royal College of Art / Design Products, since 2005.

Beyond the three founding directors, the collective has grown significantly over the last 6 years. Art historian Heloise Reynolds joined us as studio manager and zen-like organiser in mid 2010, and Peter Dalton, designer and acclaimed founder of PDID, has been an incredible addition to the studio’s work and culture since mid 2009.  Tom Metcalfe, a former british rallye champion and Dundee-educated designer, has single-handedly developed and established the position of production manager of the rAndom studio since 2009.

In mid-2010, Brunel Graduate and design engineer Dev Joshi joined the crew and is enriching the studio’s work with both deep knowledge of  all matters related to design engineering as well as keen and neat thinking. Further to this, the studio is proud to collaborate with Aline Dufat (an interaction and communication designer from the London College Of Communication), and Sav Jeyendran, also a Brunel graduate.

Even though she’s technically not part of the studio, this is a good place to say a big thanks to independent curator Natalie Kovacs, who has been tirelessly supporting the studio’s work since we met in Ingo Maurer’s show room in New York in May 2006. Natalie formed Incubator together with Rachel Verghis in 2010, and since then they have been supporting rAndom in expanding the body of work significantly in 2011 and beyond.

Then there’s those who were part of the studio for a while and moved on, or are taking a break to further their undoubtedly promising careers: First of all, Oliver Bennett, who has contributed to a lot of the studio’s projects since 2008 and currently pursues a degree from Ravensbourne College Of Communication. Joe Knowles, who can lift most of the studio’s work without mechanical help, will be re-joining the studio over summer 2011, Martin Charlier (already a graduate from Ravensbourne) has been with us for most of 2010 and now works on a EU funded research project.

Further, we’ve had the pleasure of working with Andrea Cuius-Boscarello, an ingenious coder,  Ben Alun-Jones, an award winning RCA graduate, Gad Valdelievre, an MSc business student from the Kings College, brilliant Amy Blight, who worked with us in Brixton and Shoreditch, Ioannis Karalis, Rebeckah Rose, Sebastian Muellauer, Emmanuel Koechert, Daniel Schulze, Laurie Hills, Aya Miura, Ben Curnow, Harry Worth and last but not least, our first ever intern, Johannes Laue, whom we’ve met in Tokyo on a tube in 2005.

Thanks to all of you!
