"Audience" Installation wins award at Ars Electronica

We're pleased to anounce that our Audience installation has been awarded an honourable mention in the Interactive Art category of the Prix Ars Electonica 2009.

A new iteration of Audience will be shown by Carpenters Workshop Gallery during this year's Design Miami // Basel event in Switzerland from June 9 to June 14 2009.

rAndom International for PHILIPS Lumiblade / Superstudio Piu / Milan 2009

rAndom International was commissioned by Royal Philips Electronics' Lumiblade division to create an interactive installation that unlocks the creative potential of their next generation OLED technology. With the opportunity to work with thousands of OLEDs straight from their lab, we started this project by creating "You fade to light", the worlds first OLED media wall. Fascinated by the beautiful mirror finish quality of the individual OLED modules we developed an installation that allows the viewer in front of it to engage with the light in a physical way. The wall is reflecting the person in front of it and then subtly fades their mirror image into light.

The ultra-thin Lumiblade wall is on show at a special exhibit at Superstudio Piú in Zona Tortona in Milan from 22 – 27 April.

AUDIENCE at the Royal Opera House

Audience is an installation conceived by rAndom International in collaboration with Chris O'Shea and consists of around 64 head-size mirror objects. Each object moves its head in a particular way to give it different characteristics of human behaviour. Some chat amongst themselves, some shy away and others confidently move to grab your attention.

When members of the audience enter the perimeter of the installation, the mirrors inquisitively follow someone that they find interesting. Having chosen their subject, they all synchronise and turn their heads towards them. Suddenly that person can see their reflection in all of the mirrors. They will watch this person until they become disinterested, then either seek out another subject or return to their private chatter. The collective behaviour of the objects is beyond the control of the viewer, as it is left entirely to their discretion to let go of their subject, with the installation aiming to reverse the roles of the viewer and the viewed during this in-voluntary interaction. Will other members of the audience experience the sensation of being ignored or excluded when they are not the centre of attention? Would the installation create a feeling of un-ease and unsettlement? The intention was to start taking interaction with an installation further away from the screen or media wall and introduce it into a more physical, three-dimensional space, and to begin to investigate if machines can evoke diverse emotional reactions with the simplest of means. Audience was shown from September 12-14 at the Royal Opera House in London. The project will be presented in detail in London on November 15, 2008 at the BFI Southbank during the onedotzero festival and part of an edition of This Happened.

Nowhere / Now here: LABORAL Centro de Arte

A new pendulum installation by rAndom International is currently on show at the LABoral Centro de Arte in Gijon / Spain. Nowhere/Now/Here, an exhibition curated by the creative partnership of Roberto Feo and Rosario Hurtado (El Último Grito) challenges the perception of design by questioning our relationship with the environment. Taking the viewpoint that our environment has become part of us rather than us being part of it, as its point of departure, Nowhere/Now/ Here encourages us to see design as an integral component of the world-shaping process. "Audience" at the Royal Opera House London, Sept 12-14

We are in the finishing stages of building "Audience", a new installation that will premiere on September 12th, 2008 at Wayne McGregor's Deloitte Ignite Festival at the Royal Opera House in London. As a complement to the installation, McGregor has choreographed a short piece. For the development of the interactive aspects of "Audience" rAndom International are working with designer Chris O'Shea.

The Deloitte Ignite Festival will feature new works by Blast Theory, Julian Opie, Scanner and others. It is free but visitors will need to register for tickets. The festival runs from Friday, September 12th 10AM through to Sunday, September 14th, 5PM. We are looking forward to seeing you there.
