SMP Fluid Furniture

Spring 2002

In 2002 we have produced a range of working protoypes of FluidFurniture, a piece of furniture that could be "switched on" and then be moulded into a great number of shapes such as tables, chairs, shelves and sideboards etc..

When switched of, the furniture would solidify, remaining in the shape given until switched on again. The process has been proved to be repeatable a great number of times, so it can be said that such a piece of furniture would be truly mass customisable.

These designs make use of a prototype polymer from Japan. In practical terms this object means that, starting from a flat sheet, you can mould your piece of furniture into whatever shape you want it to be and use it until you decide to, say, transform a table into a chair for an unexpected guest or so.
